Things you should not miss while travelling to Mauritius

"Mauritius was made first and then heaven; heaven being copied after Mauritius" - Mark Twain.

It is no surprise that Mauritius is described as 'heaven on earth. This incredible island is renowned for its white sand beaches, clear turquoise water, and mesmerizing beauty. The island perfectly balances relaxation and luxury with adventure and excitement. Here are some of the things you wouldn't want to miss while travelling to Mauritius:

1) Whale watching:

Swimming with these enigmatic creatures in their natural habitat can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The chances of spotting whales off the southwestern shores of the islands are very high. Sperm whales can be spotted all year round, while humpback whales are more commonly seen from July to November. These two varieties are the most common, but others also frequent Mauritius's waters. The speedboat tours usually depart from the beaches of Flic-en-Flac or Tamarin. Whales are spotted when they surface to breathe. The speedboats rush near them to give the tourists a closer look. You can also swim along with the whales if you feel adventurous. It is overall a fantastic experience.

2) Swim with dolphins:

Spinner and Bottlenose dolphins can be spotted in Tamarin bay in the early morning before they return to the open sea. Dolphins are very playful and much easier to spot than whales. Don your snorkel set and jump in the water to swim with them. Dolphins usually swim in groups and can get close to you. You would want to take advantage of this fun activity. Would you?

3) Catamaran cruise

Not much can match up to cruising through the crystal clear waters of Mauritius. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, delicious grilled food, music, and warm hospitality. While many tours are available, the most popular one is a trip to Ile Aux Cerfs island, which is situated off the east coast of Mauritius. Water sports like parasailing, tube riding, and snorkeling are available on the boat.

4) Snorkel with turtles

This is a unique experience where you can snorkel and spot huge sea turtles beside you. The best sites for swimming with turtles are Trou aux Biches and Grand Bay. You don't have to go far from the beach, and since the water is not very deep, you get to observe the turtles closely.

5) Sunset watching

You can witness the most beautiful sunsets in Mauritius. It's a tranquil and relaxing experience. Lie down on the beach and watch the sky change colors while the sun goes down. The best place to see a spectacular sunset is the flic-en-Flac beach. It can be one of the most memorable parts of your trip.

6) Chamarel 7 colored earth Geopark:

This place is as beautiful as its pictures on the web. This geological formation is the magic of a volcanic eruption that happened a million years ago. It is a relatively small area of dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colors (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow). The sands have settled in different layers creating a surreal striped pattern. The surrounding area is covered with lush green forest and is equally beautiful. This is a must-see place.

7) Scuba diving

One of the reasons you must do scuba diving in Mauritius is its amazingly clear water and the variety of beautiful corals found here. You can also see a variety of different fishes. We were lucky enough to see many beautiful fishes and sea turtles while diving. There are many diving sites in Mauritius for all levels of divers here.

8) Sugar museum:

This place showcases the history of sugar cultivation and the island's history. You will learn how sugar cultivation shaped the history and economy of this island nation. This place is more than a museum. It is an old sugar factory revamped into a museum with many exciting activities like a cane-cutting tour, rum, jam tasting, and cocktail making. You can also taste wide different varieties of sugar.

Overall, travelling to Mauritius is a sweet experience. It is one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Project E-waste collection drive

Poster for social media campaign  Environmental conservation is a cause I deeply care about. I've always been actively involved in school events and was even chosen as the e-warrior representative at school. To further this cause, my friends Panth Patel, Devarsh Kshatri, and I organized an e-waste collection drive in our small town of Anand. Anand lacks proper infrastructure for e-waste recycling, with the nearest authorized recycling units located in Ahmedabad or Vadodara. Sadly, about 95% of India's e-waste is recycled by unauthorized units or kabadiwalas, using non-scientific methods and often involving child labor, posing serious environmental and health hazards. To address this issue, during Diwali, when people traditionally clean their homes and dispose of unused items, we initiated our collection drive. We spread awareness through posters and messages on  WhatsApp groups, encouraging our community to participate. Additionally, we conducted an e-survey to as...

My Experience at YTS Summer Programme - June 2022

Plaksha University's Young Tech Scholar programme is one of India's most prestigious summer programmes for high schoolers. It offers an opportunity to learn from global academicians like Dr Ravi Jasuja ( Harvard Medical School), Dr Hanumant Singh ( North Eastern University), Dr Shashank Tamaskar (Purdue University) and founding members of Plaksha University. I applied for it on the very last day as I was not sure if I would be able to spare time for summer school. The application was comprehensive, with essays and questions based on logical thinking. Much to my joy my application was accepted. I was extremely excited but also nervous about going. I was going to travel alone for the first time. Thankfully, I could make some friends online beforehand through the college portal, which made me really look forward to the programme. The day finally arrived. My parents dropped me at the Ahmedabad airport. I was super excited, and my excitement grew as I reached Delhi and boarded the Y...
