My Diwali holidays this year were spent exploring Pondicherry with my parents and family friends, creating cherished memories filled with spirituality, Indian culture, history, and adventure. Despite the weather's attempt to dampen our spirits, our curiosity remained unyielding.
Day 1: Arrival and Cultural Immersion
After landing at Chennai Airport, we embarked on a road trip to Pondicherry, making a stop at the iconic Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram. The beautiful structure built during 700 – 728 AD by the Pallavas is a masterpiece as it depicts the ancient finesse of art. The old maps show the Shore Temple as part of the seven pagodas, however only one is there for us to explore. Archeologists feel that the remaining six pagodas must have been washed away by the sea and buried in sand. Learning about the temple's submerged parts piqued my curiosity, leaving me yearning to dive and explore them. Arriving in Pondicherry by late afternoon, we settled into the charming La Maison De Bitasta, a traditional French homestay. The interiors of the place were tastefully done and the host, Lady Bitasta, was also very warm and helpful. An evening stroll along the promenade preceded a delightful dinner at the very popular Coromandel Cafe.

Day 2: Diving Adventures and Cultural Encounters
Excitement filled the air as I ventured into a diving expedition. Because of the storm warning and an orange alert, we were directed to dive into the depths of a quarry instead of the open sea. This didn't dampen my spirits as I was determined to accomplish a deep diver certification. There were many firsts on this diving trip. It was very dark in the quarry, and we could only see the area illuminated by our head torches. I was using Nitrox cylinders for the first time, which allowed me to spend more time underwater. I dived to a depth of 40 meters and completed three dives. Afterward, we refueled at Dilliwala 6 for lunch. We then explored the Auroshikha store and the mesmerizing marbling department of Aurobindo ashram, delving deeper into Pondicherry's artistic essence.

Day 3: More Diving and Relaxation
Another day dedicated to diving included training for the PADI Search and Recovery Diver Specialty. Afterward, we enjoyed quality time with family. Despite restrictions on beach visits, we found solace in the beautiful rain-soaked surroundings and engaged in some fun-filled activities at the game zone.
Day 4: Auroville Expedition
Venturing beyond Pondicherry's borders, we embarked on a transformative journey to Auroville. From the awe-inspiring Matrimandir to the innovative initiatives at Svaram and the sustainable practices at the Auroville Earth Institute, each stop offered insights into conscious living. The day unfolded with visits to Spirulina farms, the Upasana shop, and the poignant Tsunamika dolls exhibition. A refreshing stop at Auroville Beach rejuvenated our spirits. Our day concluded with a leisurely stroll through the White Town, appreciating its architectural charm. Flaunting cobblestone streets and mustard yellow houses, the White town retains the old-world charm. Most of these French buildings have been converted into heritage hotels, restaurants, quirky cafes, and art galleries. The buildings are mostly painted in shades of yellow and the well-paved clean pathways are lined with shady trees. Our beautiful day culminated in a delectable dinner at Villa Shanti, one of the well-known cafes in White Town.

Day 5: A Spiritual Farewell
On our final day, we visited Aurobindo Ashram, paying tribute to Mirra Alfass. Since it was the death anniversary of Mirra Alfass (also known as the mother to her followers), we had an opportunity to visit her inner chamber at the Aurobindo Ashram. Filled with enriching memories, we bid adieu to Pondicherry, leaving with a sense of fulfillment from our captivating coastal sojourn.
